On this date, Verulamium Park in St Albans will come to life as St Albans City and District Council hosts the District’s first Inclusive Sports Festival to welcome the Paralympic Flame. One hundred acres of park land will be used to create a stimulating environment where residents are able to take part in as many sports as possible at one venue, in one day.

The free event will begin at noon with a procession including local athletes, representatives from local disability groups and the local Flame Ambassador carrying the Paralympic Flame. An action-packed programme of activities will then run through until 5pm.

Local sports clubs and organisations will host demonstrations and taster sessions showcasing Olympic and Paralympic type sports with the aim of inspiring and motivating people to become more active.

Mini sports competitions will also be held throughout the day, including turn up and play events and competitions involving young athletes who are members of the Herts Youth Games training squad or who have attended courses through Sportivate, a Sport England scheme, funded by the National Lottery.

In addition, there will be a wide range of informal physical activity sessions for the whole family to take part in.

Cllr Mike Wakely, Portfolio Holder for Sports, Leisure and Heritage at St Albans City and District Council, said: “It is fantastic news that St Albans has been selected to play host to the Paralympic flame at what will be the first Inclusive Sports Festival to take place in the City. Organised by the Council, the sports festival will provide exciting, accessible opportunities for the community to be inspired by and engage in sport. It will also create an environment where local athletes can showcase their talent and mainstream sport and disability sport come together as equals.”

Chair of the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Board, Derrick Ashley said: “I am delighted that a community in Hertfordshire has the honour of hosting a Flame Celebration for the Paralympic Torch Relay. I’m sure the people of St Albans will celebrate the spirit and values of the Paralympic Movement and make it a memorable occasion for all those that live, work and visit Hertfordshire.” A total of 34 communities around the country have taken the opportunity to host Flame Celebrations and be part of the programme of events that will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012

Our annual Easter Egg Hunt was a great success with over 230 children braving the weather and joining the hunt.  They were entertained by our Easter Bunny from Wish Upon a Party and by some great stalls from Mini Moovers, Wish Upon a Party, Theatre Train, Sandy Art, Crafty Goats, Mac ‘n’ Molly, The Orchid Way, Nick Light and not forgetting our very popular face painters and colouring table!

Inn on the Park Scones

Makes 8-9

  Freshly made in the Café every day!

Ingredients:

340g  self raising flour

85g   butter (chopped)

Level quarter teaspoon salt (ground)

55g   caster sugar

125ml semi skimmed milk

4 level tablespoons of natural yoghurt

35g    sultanas

35g    raisins

Method:

1.     Sift the self-raising flour into a bowl and grind the salt with a pestle and mortar.  Add to the bowl and mix together.

2.    Put the chopped butter in the microwave for 10 seconds until softened.

3.    Rub the butter into the flour mix with your fingers for 4 to 5 mins until the mix resembles breadcrumbs.

4.    If making fruit scones, add the sultanas and raisins and mix well.

5.    Add milk to the bowl and stir with a fork.  Add yoghurt and mix.

6.    Form into a dough ball.  Remove from the bowl and place onto a floured surface.  Shape and flatten the dough to a circle of 2cms thick.

7.    Using a 68mm round cutter, cut out the scone shape and place onto greased parchment paper on a baking tray.

8.    Brush the tops of the scones with beaten egg and place in the top of the gas oven for 14 mins.  Oven must be pre-heated to 220’c. Spinning the tray half way through cooking.

9.    Remove from the oven and place onto a wire rack to call.
